U19 Post Primary School Basketball Midland Regional Semi-Final Result St. Mary’s Edenderry 60 Borrisokane CS 17
On Thursday November 23rd St. Mary’s Secondary School Edenderry welcomed Borrisokane Community School for the U19 Post Primary School Basketball Midland Regional Semi-Final. Pool 2 leaders St. Mary’s faced a strong outfit from Borrisokane who finished up in 2nd place in Pool 1. The home side started well with some excellent passing from Aoibheann McAndrew opening up the Borrisokane defence, scores from captain Saoirse Ankers, Alicia Kavanagh and Angela Brady gave St. Mary’s the early lead. Tara McDonnell who led the way on defence with some excellent rebounding also got her name on the score sheet as Edenderry finished the 1st quarter 18 -3 ahead. The 2nd quarter saw St. Mary’s continue to apply pressure on both ends of the court. Courtney Farrell and Aoibheann McAndrew finished off a couple of fast breaks as Edenderry displayed some fantastic team passing. Borrisokane kept their side of the scoreboard ticking over with some excellent scores. Half Time St. Mary’s led 32 -9. St. Mary’s started the 2nd half in the same way they finished the first, excellent defence from Courtney Farrell and Avril Donegan saw the home side shut down the Borrisokane effort. Alicia Kavanagh and Saoirse Ankers again combining to help increase the St. Mary’s Lead. Aoibheann McAndrew’s pin point passing setup Angela Brady for a few excellent scores under the basket. Emily Lawton and Ava Bennett made a huge impact in the 4th quarter showing of their accurate shooting combining for 8 points. Eva Barai Dafe and Agata Drabik kept the Borrisokane defence guessing as they moved the ball around quickly with some crisp passing. Ruby Buckley cleared up on defence helping St. Mary’s close out the win in what was a superb team performance. This is the 3rd year in a row the girls from St. Mary’s Edenderry have reached the Midland Regional Final and they will face off against either St. Finian’s Mullingar or Mountmellick CC.

The U19 Girls' Basketball Team of St. Mary's Edenderry finished off their group matches last week. On Friday 10th November St. Mary's made the trip to Mountmellick CC for a rematch of last year's Midland Final. It was a game of two halves which saw the home side race to an early lead. St. Mary' s rallied in the second half with a very strong defensive performance holding the home side to a single figure score . Some sharp shooting from Angela Brady, Tara McDonnell, Saoirse Ankers and Alicia Kavanagh helped St. Mary's come away with the win on a scoreline of 22-20 . St Mary's, who also defeated Scoil Mhuire by 34-10 last month, finish the group stages in 1st place and have secured a home semi final versus Borrisokane CC. They will face off on Thursday 23rd November. On Monday 25th of September the U19 Girls' Basketball team from St. Mary's Secondary School Edenderry hosted St. Conleth's Community College Newbridge in the first game of the Midlands league. The defending champions St. Mary’s started the game well with a couple of quick scores to lead at the end of the first quarter 10-2. The second quarter saw some great defence from both sides but Edenderry’s offence proved to be too strong for the girls from Newbridge as Aoibheann McAndrew, Avril Donegan and Emily Lawton put their names on the score sheet. St. Conleth’s would regroup in the third quarter scoring a number of excellent baskets while slowing down the Edenderry attack. Saoirse Ankers, Angela Brady and Alicia Kavanagh made sure St. Mary’s kept their lead with some great shooting. In the final quarter the defending champions pulled away, Aoibheann McAndrew and Angela Brady combining again to help increase the lead for St. Mary’s. In an excellent end to end game St. Mary’s came away with win on a score line of 42-10. St. Mary's will play Scoil Mhuire Clane on Tuesday 3rd of October in game 2.
